Located on the Derwent Estuary in Hobart, we’ve been part of the community for almost 100 years. We are one of the world’s largest zinc smelters in terms of production volume, with a capacity of 280,000 tonnes of market metal. Our high value added products are exported to the growing markets in Asia.
We employ approximately 600 people (both direct and contract employees) and continue to be a major contributor to Tasmania’s economy, representing around 25% of the state’s total exports.
The culture at Nyrstar Hobart centres on safety, pride and innovation – a strong theme since its inception in 1917. With competitive energy prices key to luring major economic activity to Tasmania, the establishment of our site formerly known as the Hobart Zinc Works and the Hydro Electric Power Metallurgical Company paved the way for power roll out to Tasmania.
The strong relationship the smelter has with our community has been forged over many years and continues today through community meetings, sponsorships and partnerships as well as being an active participant in the community.
