I came back to Tasmania in 2003 after working in the construction industry in NSW, out in the central west, where it was nothing for the temperature to be in the vicinity of 44-48 degrees. Born and bred on King Island, and being surrounded by a rich ocean culture of swimming, diving, surfing and fishing made the heat and dust seem like a nightmare- not to mention the flies!! Starting a young family was the catalyst in coming home, to be closer to other family, and have access to the clean, invigorating ocean and the lushness and diversity of the ’bush’, which certainly wasn’t apparent in the stunted undergrowth in the dust of outback NSW. Starting as a machine operator at Grange Resources Savage River Mine has led me to where I am today; A safety and Training Coordinator at the Port Latta pellet plant. Grange value their employees and offer upskilling opportunities to achieve a best practice work ethic amongst employees. They go beyond just ’compliance to legislation’; to innovation, an enriched empowered work ethic and a valuable company culture. Grange is part of Tasmania’s heritage and culture, and my belief is it sits proudly among the states top institutions.
